Abbot Ale
Greene King, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England - Ale
Thursday 23 February 2012 – 5%Alc./Vol. 82 / 100
Initial Thoughts
Oh my! This is a pretty beer! The magnificent warmth of shiny, aged copper, reflecting light through the glass. Promising...
First Sip
Ah! England! A quintessential example of that fine breed, the true English ale. All smoothness and warmth (warmth in attitude, not temperature). Well rounded malt, soft hop bitterness, presented in a silky, almost creamy ale. Love it.
Halfway Through
The initial qualities are fading for me somehow. Still smooth and creamy but almost too smooth... I’d usually expect more flavour to emerge as an ale like this warms a little. In this case though it’s sort of going to sleep.
Bottoms Up
Overall good. Not great, but good. I’d recommend this beer be paired with an interesting conversation, catching up with an old friend or maybe on a date. Put it together with something interesting to distract from the overly polite mildness of Abbot Ale. Toward the end of the experience, I found it had a rather nice aftertaste. Great start, a little dull in the middle and a good finish. Overall, pretty good upon reflection.
